Wolverhampton Wanderers FC History : (1888-1939)

It was the early year in the Football League, the first own goal scored by Gershom Cox of Aston Villa benefitted the Wolves.

Wolves remained as members of what became the First Division from 1888 until relegation in 1906.
They first time won the FA Cup beating Everton 1-0 at in 1893 at Fallowfield Stadium in Manchester. In 1895, they again enjoyed the FA Cup by gaining a surprising victory against Newcastle United by 3-1 as a Second Division club. Wolves suffered relegation again in 1923, dropping into the Third Division (North). Wolves' first promotion was won just a year later, narrowly claiming the Third Division North title at the first attempt ahead of Rochdale.
Wolves after 8 years again returned in the First Division in 1932, claiming the Second Division title and another promotion. In the years leading up to the Second World War, the team became established as one of the leading club sides in England. In 1938, Wolves needed only to win the last game of the season to be champions for the first time, but were beaten 1–0 at Sunderland and Arsenal claimed the title. The year 1939 ended in a runner up for Wolves this time behind Everton, and endured more frustration with defeat in the last pre-War FA Cup Final, losing 4–1 to underdogs Portsmouth.

The 2010–11 season was the 113th season of competitive league football in the history of English football club Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club competed in the Premier League, the highest level of English football, for a second consecutive season.
